Educational program helps train employees for DC jobs.<\/p>\n

Managers looking for a good source of quality recruits should investigate local educational programs.\u00a0 For example, the Baldy View Regional Occupational Program<\/a> in Rancho Cucamonga, Calif., has been training new warehouse employees for more than a decade.<\/p>\n

Richard Brodeur teaches a distribution and warehousing class that focuses on entry level distribution and warehouse skills. This includes everything from the basics of SKUs to receiving, stocking, packing, shipping, lifting and loading techniques, transportation systems, and essential business forms.<\/p>\n

But this is more than just classroom training.\u00a0 The students also spend several weeks onsite working in a warehouse.\u00a0 Although they typically work as unpaid interns a few hours a day, this isn\u2019t \u201cfree\u201d work for the warehouse, since the students still have to be supervised and trained in specific warehouse practices.<\/p>\n

Over time, the list of companies that participate in the program has grown from three to 30.\u00a0 Even more impressive, there are 70 to 100 companies always interested in graduates of this program.<\/p>\n

Brodeur says that involvement from participating companies is essential to the program\u2019s success.\u00a0 Several have volunteered to serve on an advisory board.\u00a0 This helps Brodeur formulate lesson plans and curriculum.<\/p>\n

Rick Mefferd, owner of Hubcaps.com, started participating in the program when his son went through the training.\u00a0 He now uses students in his DC. \u201cIt\u2019s an incredible program.\u00a0 It\u2019s a win-win situation.\u00a0 You bring kids in here and you can actually see if they fit in your business,\u201d Mefferd raves. You\u2019re helping them at the same time, training them and giving them very valuable skills.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen you run a business, it\u2019s pretty irritating trying to hire somebody,\u201d adds Mefferd. \u201cIn the past, I\u2019ve done newspaper, I\u2019ve done Monster.com, and I\u2019ve been very discouraged there and very encouraged with this avenue.\u201d<\/p>\n
