How to Stop Hub Caps Squeaking & Rattling

Have you been bothered with any of the following questions...

  • Is that loose hubcap noise I hear?
  • How do I stop hub caps from rattling?
  • Why do hubcaps squeak?
  • How can I fix rattling hubcaps?

If you think your wheel covers are the source of a squeaking or rattling noise coming from your car, please follow our step by step help!

Instructions

1

Noise Test
Remove all of your wheelcovers with special removal tool and take a drive close to some buildings to listen for the noise to reflect back off of the buildings through your open car windows. If the noise is gone during this easy trial, repeat the same trial one hub cap at a time to determine if it is just one or all of your wheelcovers.

“Squeaky & Rattling”
Plastic wheel covers can rattle or squeak if there are bent or broken clips on the back side. If you carefully inspect your clips and find that they are broken, the only thing you can do is replace the hub cap. If you have bent clips, you must fix or straighten them correctly using a hair dryer (Hubcap Repair Video). You also may be missing one of your retention rings that must be replaced.
Metal hub caps can rattle and squeak when the stainless steel clips have worn grooves in the rim itself. You can visually see and feel these grooves very easily. In this case, to stop the wheelcovers from squeaking, you will need to replace the wheel and not the hub cap. If your metal hubcap has a split clip you will need a new one.
